Merzouga is the classic gateway to the Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi. Come for sunrise and starlight, for movement across sand, and for the rare calm of wide horizons.

Merzouga is a small settlement beside Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco's great dune fields. The village is the threshold; the changing sand, oasis edges, and communities around it make up the wider destination.
The experience is strongest when it is part of a southbound journey rather than a rushed out-and-back excursion.

The dunes change character throughout the day, soft morning light, blazing midday, and cinematic sunsets. Nights are the main event: stillness, firelight, and a sky that feels close enough to touch.

The memorable part of the Sahara is not only the landscape. Music, tea, food, and conversation give the night its human scale and connect the dunes to the communities who live beside them.

Reaching Merzouga takes time, and that journey is part of the experience. Routes usually unfold through Atlas passes, kasbah country, palm valleys, and towns along the desert edge.

Pack for temperature swings: desert days can be warm while nights become cold. Sand gets everywhere, choose simple, durable clothing.
From place to passage
Merzouga is the Erg Chebbi chapter of a larger crossing, reached slowly through Morocco's changing terrain rather than as an isolated excursion.
